EXHIBITION
We were gatherers before hunters.
Le Guin argues that the earliest, most foundational human cultural invention was not the spear or the sword (the tool of the hunter), but the container - a bag, basket, or vessel used to gather and hold food and supplies.
Revising Human Origins: Le Guin challenges the traditional, male-centric, and 'linear' narrative that human progress was driven by violent, heroic hunting.
The Container vs. The Weapon: She proposes that the first cultural tool was a receptacle - a 'carrier bag'- designed to hold what was gathered (nuts, berries, seeds, roots).
The Storytelling Connection: She relates this 'gathering' to fiction, suggesting a story is also a container, holding meanings and experiences together rather than just driving toward a violent climax.
